staples

If I were to provide you with a list of my “to buy” items they would probably all be staple pieces. I believe I do not have enough plain and simple pieces in my wardrobe, and the amount of clothes I do not wear regularly can prove that in an instant. I am still looking for the perfect black patent leather belt which seems as extinct as the Dodo (seriously, why can’t I find one?) but recently I have acquired some clothes that I would categorise as staples.

My head is tilted this way because I’ve gone insane over finding that belt, but I’m happy because I have two new pieces that I will wear again and again. The skirt is from Miss Brown, as I had perilously tried to find a perfect black pleated skirt in op shops but gave up when I found this one. It’s a kind of lacy material which makes it a bit more interesting than a black polyester pleated skirt and it’s the perfect length for me. And the denim shirt I got from the recent Two Bucks ‘Til Wednesday sale for $10. I’ve also been looking for a cheap denim shirt in the op shops because I want to try (again) to dip bleach one but this fits so well I kind of like it how it is, so my search for a guinea pig shirt continues.

I also got this from Two Bucks for 10 bucks and I’m so happy in my grandma cardi I fell into a blissful slumber whilst taking this photo. Not really, I just never know how to pose without looking ridiculous. I didn’t even try it on at the sale and it’s like it was meant to be. I have replaced my other cream cardigan that I got in Vinnies Claremont which is probably too small for me and is missing two buttons, this new one has all its buttons so wins.

And the last of my Two Bucks finds but not really a staple piece, a scarf for $4. I have many scarves which now dwell on my scarf twine and peg display system (I might share it with you but I need to decide whether it looks good or not first) but you can never have too many scarves, especially when they are all different patterns and sizes and whatnot. I didn’t realise until Mum pointed it out but this paisley scarf is actually a paisley dragon scarf. Good job using your eyeballs Mother.

I even ironed it before taking this picture, super dedication there my friends.

marks & sheds

Recently, and by recently I mean ages ago, I went down to Mandurah to go op-shopping with Hannah and Sophia. I’ve been terribly lazy and I blame work as well for my delay in posting about what I found, but better late than never! We went to the Shed, well there’s two sheds and there used to be a house but House is no longer around. The Shed is run by the Uniting Church on Pinjarra road and is small but full of many many things. I found this Marks & Spencer skirt and I still can’t believe it was only $3! I was thinking about writing this post, trying to remember how much it was and was like “No it couldn’t possibly have been so cheap!”, but it was. It’ll be better for autumn/winter but I am very happy to keep it hidden away in my wardrobe for the perfect weather to wear it.

valentino

Like both pairs of Manolos, David did what he born to do and  found me these two Red Valentino skirts on Neiman Marcus. They were $295 each originally but were on sale for 65% off so US$103 each. They don’t ship internationally from the website but they have a handy chat thing where I talked to some helpful people who took my order. It was $30 shipping and it only took 5 days with Fedex, my new favourite postal service. When I pulled them out of the box with David I immediately knew they were too big. David in all his high fashion wisdom had a Valentino size chart and assured me they were the right size and when they weren’t he blamed me for not remembering they are an Empire line. I still don’t know what an Empire line is!
Red Valentino Brocade Skirt
Red Valentino Short Ottoman-weave skirt
There was no point trying to return them for a smaller size, the Ottoman Weave skirt had sold out of smaller sizes and I’m too lazy to post things back so I searched Google for the best tailor in Perth and it told me G. R. Brown. I’ve never taken anything to a tailor before so I was hesitant, especially with my first Valentino! They did a good job though, the fit is good and the seams are well done. They took them in at the zip so the pockets sit a bit far to the back but it was the easiest way to do it without reconstructing the skirts completely. The Ottoman cost $30 to tailor as it has a lining and the Brocade $28 as it is without lining. Although significantly cheaper than originally and a great addition to my wardrobe I have put myself on an online spending ban, no matter what wonderful things David finds me I will not buy them until my savings are much fatter, we think in different ways.

the holy grail

Today I went to Vinnies in Claremont for the first time ever and I was sort of expecting a lot due to the quality of the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. And I was so relieved when I actually had one of those op-shopping days that usually don’t happen to me and I always envy other people who always have them! It’s not too big but they have a lot more range than most Vinnies stores which mostly have no stock and try to hide it by spacing everything out. I ended up with 5 pieces for $36 and here they are!

This shirt was $7 and is Country Road, huge on me but I plan to bleach the sleeves a la A Pair and a Spare. The skirt is almost my favourite find for the day, it was $10 and made it Italy, yay! It’s labelled a 36 and it is extraordinarily hard to fasten because I have 3mm of fat around my ribcage that I apparently need to lose to be comfortable in it. Instead of going on a ridiculous diet that wont end in me fitting into it any better I’m just going to (and when I say that I mean Mum is going to) move the eye part of the hook and eye about 1cm closer so it’s not so difficult.

I got this jacket for $10 and it has the biggest pockets in the world which made me think I could put something cute like puppies or kittens in them and walk around. Then I thought it would be the perfect Crazy Cat Lady jacket because you can easily store a cat or 2 for when you get the urge to throw them at someone. So this is me looking incredibly weird holding Bella, a very uncooperative catmodel.

I have been searching and searching for good cream cardigans and got this one for $5. It’s a tight fit but perfect for whenever it’s chilly (duh).

When I say Holy Grail I mean it. I have been looking on eBay for vintage oversized cream cable knit cardigans for too long, most of the ones I have seen and not bought were about $20-$30 but I always said no because I thought I would try to find my own first. This beauty cost me $4! $4! I can’t believe it, so warm and snuggly, so oversized but not giant, so perfect. Prepare to see me living in this for  winter

Vinnies Claremont is at 26 Ashton Ave, a short walk from the Loch Street train station. I left a few other coats and jackets behind that would be worthy of anyones wardrobe so pay them a visit, soon!
