drug ARM armadale

On Saturday Christina and I took a trip out to Armadale to visit some op shops that I had heard great things about. We didn’t have a riot of success but I did end up with a fair bit of stuff so I can’t complain. The first shop we went to was Drug ARM on Fourth Road, there isn’t a Drug ARM on Forrest Road anymore so I have adjusted the Perth Op Shop map accordingly. This little store is packed full of stuff – clothes, toys, knick-knacks, furniture and a nice old man who had some pretty rowdy friends in the shop when we were there. And by rowdy I mean the kind of old men who like to go have a drink at the pub when the footy is on and talk loudly in small op shops. I got two blouses for $5 and Christina got a dress for $10, prices are made up when you get to the counter. They do have eftpos but the old man didn’t know how to use it so I stepped behind the counter and used my many years of retail experience to process it for him (it’s not that hard but bless his cotton socks anyway!).

Here are the blouses I got and I’ll shoot the rest of the clothes & shoes I bought and post them during the week.

a bit of beauty

I recently discovered the work of American photographer Lewis W. Hine. He’s best known for his photographs of child labour from 1920-1940 and was an active socialist but what sparked an interest for me was the beauty of the women he photographed. After looking at many photos of women working I found one which was titled “A Bit of Beauty Behind the Threads”, showing that I was seeing what he intended for his photographs to convey. I just love how immaculately presented these women are even though they are conducting menial jobs in industrial environments.

subiaco pink church op shop

photo-7Even though I work full time in Subiaco I had never ventured far enough up Rokeby Road to go to the fabled pink church op shop  (I’m on my feet all day so the thought of spending my lunch break walking is ridiculous). The Earthwise Community Op Shop is housed in the sweetest of buildings on Bagot Road and has what I miss about op shops – it is crowded, dusty, a little messy but has so much character it makes you want to look for something. The prices are set reasonably, I got this yellow dress for $6 and after I take out the strange t-shirt-turned-lining I will wear it. The length is a bit questionable but it’s scalloped at the bottom so it’d be a shame to take it up and lose it.
earthwiseyellowdressI’ve added this shop to the Perth Op Shop Map which you can see here! This op shop is open 10-5:30 Wednesday – Saturday and is maybe open on Mondays and Tuesdays if they can get a volunteer to come in. Ring up if it’s too hot to walk for no reward.

free scarf with any purchase from my etsy shop!

scarfpromo2I am currently offering a free vintage scarf with any purchase from my Etsy shop! It’s for a limited time until I run out of the free scarves and they are the ones pictured in the rainbow above! There’s no minimum spend so it’s first in, best dressed and scarves will be picked at random. They usually go for $6 in my shop so it’s both economically and fashionably advantageous!
